Wildlife in the exclusion zone has been teeming despite radiation, since people left the area around Chernobyl after the 1986 nuclear disaster, keepers of the ecological reserve said.

Adam Werbach, once the youngest head of the Sierra Club and currently on the board of Greenpeace, must have a lot more "green" in his bank account today. As Fast Company reports, his green PR firm Act Now "has been scooped up by none other than the lovemark-man himself: Saatchi & Saatchi's Kevin Roberts. The new company, called Saatchi & Saatchi S, in which Werbach will remain CEO, plans on bringing sustainability to the ad agency's clients, which include A-listers like P&G, Toyota, and Visa. ... Pairing up with Wal-Mart was painful enough for the environmental establishment to swallow.
Now Werbach will be owned by The Mad Men of Madison Avenue, the one place where greenwashing is most feared and excessive wastefulness still runs rampant." Werbach's current clients are presumably now clients of Saatchi & Saatchi S. They constitute a score of corporations, foundations, Big Green groups and others such as Amnesty International, Center for American Progress, General Mills, Nathan Cummings Foundation, National Wildlife Federation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Sierra Club and World Wildlife Fund.
Nuclear utilities in list of world's most sustainable companies 30 January 2008
The fourth annual Global 100 list of the most sustainable large corporations in the world has been announced. The list includes six energy companies and five utilities, some of which operate nuclear power plants.
The list, released by Corporate Knights and Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, includes companies from 17 countries encompassing all sectors of the economy that were evaluated according to how effectively they manage environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities, relative to their industry peers.
By country, the UK had the most companies in the Top 100, with 24, plus two that are jointly headquartered in the UK. This was followed by the USA with 16 and Japan with 13.
Included in the list under the energy sector are: Neste Oil (Finland), Nexen (Canada), OMV (Austria), Royal Dutch Shell (UK), Saipem (Italy), and Transcanada (Canada). Under utilities are listed: Centrica (UK), Fortum (Finland), FPL Group (USA), Iberdrola (Spain), and Pinnacle West Capital (USA).
Fortum owns the Loviisa nuclear power plant in Finland, as well as shares in the Finnish Olkiluoto power plant and in the Swedish Oskarshamn and Forsmark nuclear power plants. FPL operates the Turkey Point and St Lucie nuclear power plants in Florida, as well as the Seabrook plant in New Hampshire and the Duane Arnold plant in Iowa. Iberdrola has interests in seven of Spain's nuclear power plants. Pinnacle West's largest affiliate, Arizona Public Service (APS), is the operator and co-owner of the Palo Verde nuclear power plant.
Toby Heaps of Corporate Knights magazine said: "Sovereign funds from Oslo to Abu Dhabi to Moscow present a unique opportunity to transform the profits from the high carbon economy of coal and oil and pave the way to the low-carbon economy powered by renewable energy. The Global 100 companies are excellent partners to make it happen."

Fortum launches electricity eco-labels

Finnish utility Fortum will introduce two new eco-labels for electricity sold to business customers in Finland and Sweden. The labels will signify electricity produced with no carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, including nuclear-generated, and that produced entirely from renewable sources.

The pro-nuclear pro-polluter presidential candidate
Senator Barak Obama, in last night's Democratic presidential candidate debate, reaffirmed his support of both nuclear power and the oxymoron known as "clean coal". Here's what he said when asked about nuclear power in the context of the waste dilemma and the proposed Nevada dump site at Yucca Mountain:
"...keep in mind that I don't think nuclear power is necessarily our best option. It has to be part of our energy mix. We have a genuine crisis that has to be addressed. And as president, I intend to address it. And here's what we have to do. We have to, first of all, cap greenhouse gases, because climate change is real and it's going to impact Nevada, and it's impacting the entire planet. That means that we're going to have to tell polluters: We're going to charge you money when you send pollution into the air that's creating climate change. That money we can then reinvest in solar, in wind, in biodiesel, in clean coal technology, and in superior nuclear technology."
It's high time that Mr. Obama learned a few more truths about "superior nuclear technology" which, if it ever exists, will be too far into what little future we have left to address climate change in time. He must look to the present and be challenged on specifically what nuclear power can add to "our energy mix" that will serve climate change (aside from more waste with no place to put it, of course.) As for "clean coal"...too bad West Virginia isn't an early primary state.
